The Julian Alps  are a mountain range of the Southern Limestone Alps that stretch from northeastern Italy to Slovenia, where they rise to 2,864 m at Mount Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia and of the former Yugoslavia. They are named after Julius Caesar, who founded the municipium of Cividale del Friuli at the foot of the mountains. A large part of the Julian Alps is included in Triglav National Park. The second highest peak of the range, the 2,775 m high Jof di Montasio, lies in Italy.  The Julian Alps cover an estimated 4,400 km2 (of which 1,542 km2 lies in Italy). They are located between the Sava Valley and Canale Valley. They are divided into the Eastern and Western Julian Alps.

A number of peaks exceed 2000 m, but they are mostly only part of long reefs or they are just a foregone conclusion of the main peaks. The important peaks dissolve in height and magnitude. The eastern Julian Alps on the eastern edges surround the high plains of Pokljuka, Mezakla and Jelovica.

The main peaks in the Eastern Julian Alps, arranged in height, are:  Triglav (2864 m) is the highest mountain and symbol of Slovenia
, Skrlatica (2740 m is the second highest Slovenian mountain , Mangart (2679 m) , Jalovec (2645 m) symbol of the Alpine Association of Slovenia , Razor (2601 m) , Kanjavec (2569 m) , Prisojnik (2547 m) , Spik (2472 m) , Krn (2244 m) is the site of numerous fights of the Isonzo Front ,  Western Julian Alps :
The western Julian Alps are far less voluminous than the Eastern ones. They lie mostly in Italy, only parts of the Kanin group are in Slovenia. The main peaks are:  Montage (Jof di Montasio) (2753 m) ,  Vis (Jof Fuart) (2666 m) ,  Visoki Kanin (2587 m)
