This Fort was built by the Portuguese Viceroy Alfonso de Noronha in 1551, to protect the narrow frontage of Mandovi Gardens – the confluence of the Mandovi river and the Arabian sea, the fort is surrounded by durable laterite walls laid on typically Portuguese structures. It was occupied by the British Army between 1798-1813. It was later abandoned by the army and used as a prison until 1993.
