It depicts a reclining lion with a human head and was probably built in the 4th Dynasty during the reign of Chephren according to other information 2570 to 2530 BC. Since lions are considered sacred in Ancient Egyptian mythology , it is thought that they were built to protect the pharaoh’s tombs and pyramids by using their holiness and magic powers. It is estimated that the face on the Great Sphinx of Giza is the face of Khafre , one of the six Old Kingdom pharaohs who are thought to have reigned in the capital city of Memphis for 24 to 26 years during the Fourth Dynasty . It is believed to be the guardian of the Pyramids of Giza as it welcomes the rising sun. The Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt is by far the most famous and largest Sphinx.
