The Gobi extends from the Mongolian Altai and Tien Shan mountains in the west to the North China Plateau in the east, in the north the Gobi passes into the steppes of Mongolia, in the south the region is limited by the Nanshan and Altyntag mountains and the Yellow River . In terms of the totality of its desert areas, the Gobi is the largest desert in Asia  and one of the most famous places for historical, archaeological and paleontological research
