The village of Alchi is located in the Ladakh region ,Jammu and Kashmir, India, on the banks of Indus River about 13,500 feet (4,100 metres) above sea level.

The place belongs to the district of Leh and is located in the Himalayas, on the bank of the river Indus. The distance between Alchi and the capital of Ladakh, Leh, is 67 km.
Alchi has modern facilities for tourism and is best accessible during the months of June to September. The place is especially popular with visitors to the Tibetan Buddhist Monastery of Alchi.

Highlights :

  • The Choskhor of Alchi is considered one of the great places of Buddhism for the beauty of its mural decoration, a factor that adds to its antiquity. This is a center of Tibetan Buddhism but with the particularity of the strong artistic influence, by proximity, of Islamic Kashmir.
  • Sonam Dorje Palace : It is a residence of the royal family, the oldest building in the town, outside the Choskhor. It was built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is currently only used occasionally. It is a five-storey building built next to the mountain. It is in poor condition.
  • Alchi is a small village, but it has all the amenities for an overnight stay. From June to September, it provides tourists with an excellent opportunity to see the monastery and make a hike in the Himalayas, from the village they offer a beautiful view.
