Benidorm is a town on the Costa Blanca 45 kilometers northeast of Alicante in the province of Alicante in the Valencian Community, Spain.
Benidorm enjoys a particularly mild climate that contributes to its popular success. Formerly a fishing town, it became in the second half of the twentieth century a seaside resort known for its beaches and nightlife. It is one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean.
Since Francisco Ronda opened a first bathing establishment in 1893 (the Casa de banos on Levantestrand), more than 85 million tourists have visited Benidorm. The biggest tourist group in Benidorm are visitors from the UK.
Access : Coordinates: 38.534167, -0.131389 / Benidorm is reached via the N-332 road and the AP-7 motorway (two toll exits: 65A-Poniente and 65-Levante). It can also be reached by bus from Alicante, Valencia or Madrid.
The metropolitan tramway of Alicante, formerly the train of the Marina connects Alicante to Denia and serves Benidorm and the villages on its way.
Urban transport :
You can Get around in town by taxi or bus. The bus service is provided by the Llorente Bus company, known colloquially as “gua-gua”, which serves the surrounding municipalities like L’Alfas del Pi, Altea, Finestrat, Nucia, La Vila Joiosa and El Castell de Guadalest, as well as the beaches like Raco de l’Albir or Cala de Finestrat.
Highlights :
- The Mirador of Punta del Canfali. On the rock that divides the two beaches, is the fortress that served as a defense against the expeditions of Algerian and Berber pirates from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. The castle was finally abandoned leaving only a few remains of walls. a favourite scenic viewpoint
- Punta del Cavall tower. Declared of cultural interest. It is located on Punta de les Caletes or Punta del Cavall. It is also known as the “Caletes” (Torre de les Caletes). It is located in the perimeter of the Sierra Helada Nature Park.
- Urbanism : With 26 skyscrapers for only 69,000 inhabitants Benidorm is the city with the highest number of skyscrapers per capita in the world and the second largest urban unit with the highest number of skyscrapers per square meter, just behind Manhattan in New York. Benidorm is the city of Spain with the most skyscrapers in Madrid and Barcelona and one of the cities with less than 100,000 inhabitants in the world that has the most.
- beaches : In Benidorm there are two 2.5 km long beaches, the Playa de Poniente and the Playa de Levante and the Playa del Mal Pas between the old town and Playa de Poniente and the Playa de Cala Tio Ximo in Rincon de Loix.
- Tossal of the Cala. (3rd-1st centuries BC). It is a late Iberian settlement that has stood out as a commercial hub and pier since a long time ago.
- Church of Sant Jaume i Santa Anna (“Saint James and Saint Anne”) It is located on the upper part of the old town, at the top of the Canfali hill. It was built between 1740 and 1780 following the discovery of the Virgin of Suffrage, patron saint of the city.
- The cross: At the top of the Serra Gelada is a cross that represents the completion of an evangelical mission of 1962. The panorama of the three beaches is very popular with tourists, lovers, pilgrims and photographers.
- Benidorm Island. A small triangular island with beaches. is called L’Illa and also Isla de los Periodistas, which acts as a claim for visitors whose sight meets it daily. Mythological stories circulate about its origin related to the giant Roldan.
- Gran Hotel Bali : Gran Hotel Bali is a 4-star hotel located in Benidorm, Alicante, Spain.186 m high and 52 floors, it is the tallest hotel in Europe and one of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe. It was the largest building in Spain from 2002, the year of its inauguration, until November 2006. The hotel was developed by the architect Antonio Escario. It has a capacity of 776 rooms and can accommodate up to 1200 tenants. The hotel is located only 400 m from the Mediterranean Sea.
- Municipal Museum of Boca del Calvari : It is based in a space formerly occupied by the old town hall and is dedicated to temporary exhibitions related to the history of the municipality. This museum and L’Hort de Colon, just 50 meters apart, constitute the only
