Haeinsa is a Buddhist temple in Gayasan National Park, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea.
The temple is located on the flank of Mount Gayasan , near Daegu in the south of Gyeongsangnam Province in South Korea, it was first built in 802 the temple complex was completed or restored several times – in the 10th century, 1488, 1622 and 1644. Heinsa was burned down in 1817, after which the main hall was restored in 1818.
Haeinsa is one of the most famous Buddhist temples in South Korea. The famous collection of Buddhist sacred texts Tripitaka Koreana, carved on more than 80 thousand wooden tablets, is kept here. In addition to the Tripitaka Koreana, Haeinsa is home to many other items that are included in the list of National Treasures of the country.
In 1995, UNESCO included the Haeinsa buildings housing the Tripitaka Koreana as a World Heritage Site.
