Its height ranges from 800 to 1100 meters with the highest peak being 1445 meters. The name means “Mountains of Death” because legend has it that there lived the spirit of a woman of great beauty who caught the walkers and killed them. This mythical woman has been identified with the local deity Kolippavai, also known as Ettukkai Amman.
The main city is Semmedu. Arapaleeswarar Temple is the main point of pilgrimage. It used to have a reputation as an unhealthy area but today it is a tourist center for nature lovers.

A goddess by the name of Kolli Paavai or Ettukkai Amman was also worshiped for a long time.

It is located in the middle of two hills, between the two great mountains / Masila Falls on Kolli Hills / the Karavalli – Kolli Hill road / Namma Aruvi falls.
