Landskrona Castle or Landskronas Citadel is a citadel located in Landskrona, Skane, Sweden. It is internationally known for its preserved moats.
The construction of the citadel was started in 1549 by Peder Skram with Christian III as the developer. The castle, which is more a military facility – a fortress – than a castle, was completed in 1559. The castle was surrounded by a ring wall and a moat of 70 meters. There was access from the Oresund side over a winning bridge.
In 1589 Jorgen Ottesen Brahe, who was a layman at Landskrone 1588-91, started building a home for the steward .
March 20, 1644, the Swede attacked Gustav Horn Landskrone town and castle. The city had been escaped and he could go directly to a siege of the castle with its 300-man crew. On April 7, the fortress surrendered, and instead a Swedish crew of 1,000 men were placed. After the peace in Bromsebro 1645, the castle and the city became new Danish.
In 1676 the positions were the reverse. During the Skane war, the Swedish commander, Colonel Hieronymus Lindeberg, ruled the castle. But on the morning of August 3, 1676, he capitulated in front of Christian V’s soldiers. Knud Ottesen Thott was elected Danish county governor, and the citadel became an important bastion for Denmark during the rest of the war. Hieronymus Lindeberg was later asked for a martial law by the Swedish king, accused of high court. The Colonel was executed in December 1677. In 1678, Christian ordered the many Skane freshmen (of the Swedes referred to as “snaphanes”) to use the citadel as a base for their operations.
After the war, the citadel’s moat was expanded by the Swedes. There was first an outer moat, as wide as the old one, around the inner moat. Then, another two moats with connections were made.
Towards the end of the 19th century, parts of the extreme (fourth) moat and the main part of the third (spoken from the castle and out) were removed. But the main part of the moat remained and thus one of Europe’s best preserved moat systems a large park was built around the entire castle area. (“Slottsparken”), and between the two outermost moats north of the castle was built in 1901 Sweden’s second colony garden area, which today is Sweden’s oldest colony garden area (after a smaller colony garden area was removed in Malmo many years ago).
