The place is strongly linked to the Brazilian history of discovery because it was settled in 1531 by the Portuguese conqueror Martim Afonso de Sousa.In 1845 the church and monastery Convento Santo Antônio and later the lighthouse, which can be seen from afar, were completed. The historical buildings of the Morro de São Paulo are now listed as historical monuments.
Today the place is considered an insider tip for Brazilian tourism because the island’s beaches are considered very beautiful. Morro de São Paulo has its own tourist infrastructure with many guesthouses and restaurants.
