The historic center of Salvador de Bahia is an urban ensemble listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1985. It includes the historic center of the city of Salvador, capital of the State of Bahia, in Brazil, and first capital of colonial Brazil from 1549 to 1763. It consists of streets and monuments from the era of colonial Brazil. It includes the Pelourinho district and areas of neighboring districts.
This area is located in the oldest part of Salvador, the Upper City (Cidade Alta). It includes several blocks around the squares of Largo do Pelourinho and Terreiro de Jesus. It is famous for its pastel-colored streets, churches, cafes, restaurants, shops and buildings. Originally a wealthy neighborhood and an administrative and commercial center, the historic center became, with the growth of the city from 1950, a popular neighborhood and the heart of the Afro-Brazilian culture of the city, particularly for the capoeira and music.
The historic center is one of the main tourist points of the city today. It is a place for music, restaurants and nightlife.
