The Schrecksee is a small high mountain lake in the Allgäu Alps, in Bavaria,Germany.
The lake lies in a valley bounded by the Knappenkopf, Kirchendach and Kälbelespitze to the east, Kastenkopf and Lahnerkopf to the south, Älpelekopf to the west. The valley opens to the north-west. The lake is located entirely in Bavaria, the border with Austria is 300 m away.
The picturesque lake lies in a small basin and is the only alpine lake with a real island. Green meadows stretch from the framing peaks to the water.
The Schrecksee was voted the most beautiful mountain lake in the Alps in the course of a vote in the Red Bull magazine Bergwelten in summer 2016.
Access : Coordinates: 47.437, 10.466 / The valley location is Hinterstein to the northwest. The path initially follows the Hintersteiner Tal. The ascent to the ruined Taufersalpe then begins at the power station.

- The path to reach it follows the Hinterstein valley. The Schrecksee is on the Jubiläumsweg, between Willersalpe and Prinz-Luitpold-Haus, as well as close to the Landsberg hut.

Good to know : The Schrecksee is located in the Allgäu High Alps nature reserve. Therefore, partying, camping and making noise are strictly forbidden
