Starý Smokovec is a small ski resort on the territory of the municipality of Vysoké Tatry. It is located near Poprad in the Prešov region in northern Slovakia.

Smokovec includes four small ski villages: Novy, Stary, Gorny and Dolny Smokovci.
Starý Smokovec was founded in 1793. Currently, it is a popular tourist center, mainly for skiers and hiking enthusiasts. It is also an important junction of the electrified narrow-gauge railway line connecting Poprad, Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso. In Starý Smokovec there is also the lower station of the cable car to Smokovetský Šedełko.

Highlights :

  • One of the stations of the Tatra tramway line between Csorbató and Poprád, and trains of the other line depart from here for Tátralomnic.
  • Special trails for skiers and snowboarders, rope tows, and ski schools are available for athletes. Sports activities will undoubtedly be truly beneficial.
  • Hiking trails : Starý Smokovec serves as a starting base for several tourist routes. Visitors can start the ascent to Slavkovský štít or Lomnický štít in the village. Starý Smokovec is very close to Mount Hrebienok. From this mountain you can continue to Studenovodské vodopády.
  • Top sights in Starý Smokovec : One of the most famous buildings in Starý Smokovec is the Grand Hotel, built in 1904. / Another great attraction is the land funicular that starts in the town and ends at Mount Hrebienok. It was put into operation on December 21, 1908.
