The ancient city of Gerasa is located in northern Jordan and about 40 kilometers north of Amman. The ancient city of Gerasa was part of the so-called Decapolis alliance.
The city was founded by Semitic peoples in the i. e. in the 4th century in an area that was already inhabited in the Neolithic period. It became an important center thanks to the caravan routes passing through here and trade. It lived its heyday under Roman rule and was one of the most important cities of the Decapolis alliance.
Today it is recognized as one of the best preserved provincial Roman cities in the world.The  ruins are now a tourist attraction.
