The cliffs rise above the Elbe to a height of 194 meters. Bastei has been famous for more than 200 years for its unique Bastei Bridge (Basteibrücke). Originally built wooden in 1824. In 1851 it was replaced by a modern one made of sandstone. The bridge is a historical landmark, an architectural monument protected by the state.
Bastei  is the most recognizable and popular landmark and one of the most visited tourist attractions in Saxon Switzerland. It is part of a nature park that includes both Saxon Switzerland and Bohemian Switzerland (in the Czech Republic). The Bastei is popular place for rock climbing.
