The Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai, also called the Monastery of the Transfiguration, is an important Greek Orthodox monastery located on the slopes of Mount Saint , in the south of the Sinai Peninsula, at an altitude of 1,570 m, it is one of the oldest monasteries in the world still in activity.
It houses a valuable collection of icons and the second library of ancient manuscripts in the world after that of the Vatican. It has around twenty monks, mainly of Greek origin.
The Saint Catherine of Sinai monastery has been included since 2002 on the World Heritage list established by UNESCO.
Only a small part of the monastery can be visited, but the many traditions associated with it – Burning Bush, “Moses’ well”, Mount Sinai- attract many pilgrims and tourists.
