The wreck of the SV “Ulpiano”, stranded in 1870, is still visible on the southern shore of the Suderoogsand (Süderoogsand is the largest and southernmost of the three North Frisian Outer Sands (highlands) in the National Park Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea ) Germany..
The Spanish three-masted barque was stranded and crumbled on her maiden voyage,on voyage from Cadiz for Southampton , on Christmas Eve. The crew initially took refuge in the, fortunately 3 years earlier built on the sand, rescue beacon on Süderoog Sand. However, the weather was so bad that the 2 sailors were only 2 days later on Christmas Day by the former residents of Suderoogs brought to the Hallig and thus could be brought to safety. Here they stayed for the whole season for a full 10 weeks as guests.
The rear part of the Ulpiano still adorns the old thatched house of the Hallig Suderoog. Fueled by storms and tides, the disintegration of the ship’s remnants continues to advance. Added to this is the fact that the largest outer sand of North Frisia is constantly moving eastwards. So the Ulpiano flushes further and further into the North Sea.
