Ackergill Castle, also called Ackergill Tower, is a castle located in Sinclair Bay, 4 km away. north of Wick, in the Highland region of Scotland. ( United Kingdom  )

The castle was built by the Keith clan, specifically by John Keith of Inverugie, who had inherited the land where it was erected in 1354, after being purchased from the Cheynes family. The Ackergill Tower may have been built by his son, but it was First mentioned in 1538.

A legend tells the story of a young woman named Helen Gunn, who was kidnapped by John Keith for her beauty. The girl threw herself or fell from the highest tower to escape her kidnapper. Supposedly his ghost is still seen. This was in the late 14th or early 15th century and is said to have been the true beginning of all disputes between the Gunns and Keith clans which led to the so-called Battle of Champions (1478), a legal combat that led to a Keith massacre of the Gunns at St. Tear’s Chapel in a nearby village.

The castle underwent two years of restoration work before opening as an exclusive hotel and business location. It was resold in 2009 to the company AmaZing Venues, which acquired it to convert it into a luxury hotel and center to celebrate events and weddings, investing £ 2 million in their respective improvements. It was sold in 2019 to the American Betsee Parker, returning to be for private use.
