The Akrotiri Lighthouse was built in 1892 by the French company La Societe Collas et Michel. Geographically, the area is a veritable cape, with steep shores, projecting 3 miles west of the southern part of Santorini. ,Its height is 10 meters and its focal height is 100 meters. The lighthouse initially operated with oil and radiation around 23 nautical miles.Akrotiri is located right on  the sea route Piraeus – Alexandria and bears light, which is one of the best in the Greek network.

During the Second World War it was switched off and in the context of the reconstruction of the Lighthouse Network, it reopened oil in 1945 as a source of energy. In 1983 the lighthouse was powered and operated as a supervised electrician until 1988 when it was fully automated with a new modern machine and operates to this day.

Akrotiri is today a picturesque settlement of Santorini, with easy access to the stunning Red Beach, The road reaches exactly in front of the lighthouse, where descending a small slope, you have a view of the caldera and the magnificent sunset, at the tip of the island, at the southernmost point , The lighthouse is famed for its sunset views, It is no coincidence that the locals also go to the lighthouse or the hill of Prophet Elias for the sunset.

There is an asphalted road from the port of Thira (Fira) to the lighthouse entrance (parking). The nearest village of Akrotiri is 5 km from the lighthouse. / Akrotiri is connected to Fira by bus.
