Arouca 516 - the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Europe and the second in the world
Arouca 516 – the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Europe and the second in the world. Its length is 516 m. The footbridge is located in the Arouca Geopark belonging to the Global Geoparks Network, in the Arouca commune, in the Aveiro district of Portugal.

Inaugurated on April 29, 2021, and officially put into service on May 3, 2021, with a span of 516 meters, it is the longest suspension bridge in Europe and competes for the place of longest in the world with the Baglung Parbat  (576 m) in Nepal.
The 516 Arouca overlooks the rio Paiva , connecting Arouca to the Passadiços do Paiva , a wooden walkway that winds for more than 8 km inside the Geopark Arouca  on the rocky and steep slopes of the left bank of the river.
The bridge received the Portuguese Prémios Construir  architectural award in 2020 and was nominated for one World Travel Awards in 2021.

Highlights :

  • Awards :  The bridge was awarded the Portuguese architecture prize “Prémios Construir” in 2020 and is nominated for one of the World Travel Awards in 2021.
  • While the bridge is widely referred to as a pedestrian suspension bridge, CNN also gives “Tibetan Style”  for classification. The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge is also named the “Longest Tibet-style footbridge” in its entry in the Guinness Book of Records.
  • The bridge is closed to children under 6 years old, minors must be accompanied by their parents. Adults must also be accompanied by a tourist guide. A crossing is subject to a fee (as of May 2021). The use of the bridge is heavily discounted for residents of Arouca.
