Beddgelert is located in the Snowdonia National Park at the confluence of the Afon Glaslyn and Afon Colwyn rivers. The Moel Hebog mountain is also located in the national park between Beddgelert and Dolbenmaen.
Beddgelert associated and supposedly gets its name from the legendary dog Gelert. The Welsh place name means “Gelert’s grave”. Gelert was the dog of Llywelyn the Great, who went hunting and left his dog in the cradle with his little son. When he returned, he no longer saw the child and found the dog covered in blood. He immediately killed him with the sword and then discovered the uninjured baby under the pillows, and the corpse of a wolf lay next to the cradle. Llywelyn regretted his rash action and never smiled again. But the dog was buried with honor.
There is a tourist attraction in the immediate vicinity of the village believed to be Gelert’s grave. The village is also one of the stop-off points on the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon to Porthmadog. The stone built village boasts a wide range of quality amenities including award winning restaurants , traditional pubs. shops, arts and crafts , several guesthouses, B&B and much more.
