located on the banks of the Meuse and Vitbyk rivers  Torne is known as the “white town” because of the white-fronted houses in the center of the city.
Story goes back in  1794, when French troops invaded and the window tax introduced by them , which was based on the size of the windows, forced the people of Thorn to rebuild their houses. They used the stones of the old abbey, whose abbey buildings were demolished around 1800. In order to conceal the different sizes of the stones, the people of Thorn whitewashed the walls of their houses with white lime. This earned Thorn the name “The White City”.  Even today most of the houses are white  In the old town of Thorn , consisting  a major tourist attraction.
