Big Almaty Lake is a lake located in the alpine basin of the Zailiysky Alatau range, 15 kilometers south of the city of Almaty, in Kazakhstan.

Big Almaty Lake is a lake located in the alpine basin of the Zailiysky Alatau range, 15 kilometers south of the city of Almaty, in Kazakhstan.

Big Almaty Lake is located  south of Almaty city, at an altitude of 2497 m above sea level, in the valley of the Big Almaty River. The length of the coastline is 3 km, the depth is 30-40 m, the surface area is 0.9 square kilometers. Depending on the season, the lake changes color – from light green to turquoise blue , this Lake is considered to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Officially, the area around the lake belongs to the Ile-Alatau National Park.
Entrance to the lake requires a fee to enter the national park. Since the lake is the main source of drinking water for Almaty, swimming in it is prohibited.
