Cape Spear is famous for two things: for being the easternmost point of Canada and for its lighthouse, which has been in operation since 1836.

Cape Spear on Newfoundland, just a few miles southeast of St. John’s, located on the Avalon Peninsula, in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, in the eastern part of the country, 1,800 km east of the capital Ottawa ( Canada )  ,is the easternmost point of the North American continent.

The cape is often considered by many to be the most eastern location in North America. It is closer to Paris ( 4000 km) than to Vancouver (5020 km).

It was the Portuguese navigators who called the place “Cape of Hope”, giving rise to the names “Cap d’Espoir” in French and “Cape Spear” in English.

Highlights :

  • A striking landmark is the 1835 built, second oldest lighthouse Newfoundland. He now houses a museum. Other attractions on the open area include a second lighthouse. The original Cape Spear lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and the location has been designated a National Historic Site of Canada.
  • Cape Spear battery : the Cape Spear battery, located just northeast of the historic lighthouse.In 1941, two M1888 American cannons were installed, totally obsolete, in the new battery of Cape Spear, in the extreme east of Canada. The objective: to defend the entrance to the port of San Juan and help protect the convoys of World War II between North America and Europe.
