Costa da Caparica is a small town located next to the Atlantic Ocean, south of the Tagus River about 15 kilometers from the center of Lisbon.
The area is very popular and frequented because its beaches are one of the best in the vicinity of the Portuguese capital. The beaches of Costa de Caparica extend from the southern side of the mouth of the Tagus to the south, beginning in the homonymous population and ending in the small town of Fonte da Telha. From there, the beaches are more wild and difficult to access, at the gates of the Sierra da Arrabida.
Near the mouth of the Tagus River in Lisbon, the Costa de Caparica is the largest beach area in Europe, it has a whopping 30 kilometers of endless sand. At only 15 km from Lisbon the Costa de Caparica is a large leisure area full of restaurants, discos and terraces.
Access : Coordinates: 38.645, -9.237 / it has a regular and very economical express bus service, with which it only takes 30 minutes to arrive from the center of Lisbon. Bus 161 from Areeiro station and 153 from Plaza de Espana.
Ferry: from the pier of Cais do Sodre to Cacilhas and, once there take bus 124 to Costa da Caparica.
Getting around : Transpraia tram will take you where you have to go, going up and down the shore. if you want to see the less urbanized beaches, you can take the Transpraia tram, which runs by the sea and makes 19 stops, each on a different beach.This costs € 2.50
Attractions :
- A tourist train called Transpraia (Minitren de Caparica, four stations and 15 boardings) with direct access to the beaches and its 4 recreational camps (camping), runs 9 kilometers from its coast to reach Fonte da Telha.
- Some of the beaches that make up Costa da Caparica are: Nova Praia, Castelo Beach, Mermaid Beach, Sao Joao Beach, CDS Beach, Fonte da Telha Beach, among others.
Praia de Bela Vista or also known as Praia 19, has been listed as one of the most popular beaches for gay tourism in the Iberian Peninsula and throughout Europe. - Fonte da Telha is located 10 kilometers south of the main station and is walled by a continuous stretch of golden cliffs, topped by pines and eucalyptus.
- Covento dos Capuchos : the convent of Capuchin monks of the 16th century,located on top of the cliffs. A few meters from the viewpoint there is a convent built in 1558. Although it was partially ruined by the earthquake of 1755, the Renaissance facade was saved.
- Protected Landscape of Costa de Caparica Fossil Cliff : The entire coast is a natural park, with pine trees, lentisks and eucalyptus forests in the lower reaches and canyon positions of the twentieth century such as Bateria da Raposa, located on higher ground
- Solar dos Zagallos : This 18th-century mansion was acquired by the municipality and became a cultural center, with gardens open to the public during the day.
- Surf : Costa da Caparica is a popular place to surf thanks to its constant good waves to practice it.The most experienced surfers will surely prefer to go to Prain de Guincho or the Sintra coast, or consider the towns of Sagres, Nazare or Peniche
