Fort Santo Domingo is a historic fortress located in the Tamsui District of New Taipei City.Taiwan.
Originally built as a wooden fort by the Spaniards in 1628, it was first destroyed by the Spaniards themselves following the defeat suffered in 1642 by the Dutch, who rebuilt the current fort on the site of the previous one, renaming it “Fort Antonio”. As the Dutch were called by Han immigrants “red-haired people”, the fort was nicknamed “strong Red Hair”
From postwar period until 1980, the fort remained the seat of an unofficial British consulate, as the United Kingdom did not recognize the Republic of China. From 1980 the Taiwan government decided to convert the fort into a museum, the interior of which was restored thanks to photos of the time. Today it is regarded as an important historical site and known as the British Consulate Residence.

Highlights :
- The site of Fort San Domingo includes the fortress, the residence of the English consul and the southern portal built during the Qing period.
- The main fort is considered to be one of the first buildings built on the island and cannons were placed in front of the fortress which can be traced back to the Jiaqing period.
- The English consul’s residence building is located east of the main fortress and is built in the English style. The southern portal is the only structure that follows the Chinese style.
Open Hours : the fort is open to the public on Tuesdays – Sundays, from 9:00 – 17:00, with an entrance fee of NT $ 60 for adults and NT $ 40 for students.
