In 1891 the Brig-Visp-Zermatt regular gauge railway was opened, followed by plans to build a railway from Zermatt, deep in the valley, up to the Monte Rosa massif. A construction concession was granted in 1892, construction work began in 1896, and the road opened on August 20, 1898.
The Gornergrat Railway, linking Zermatt to the Gornergrat in the Monte Rosa massif region. In Zermatt, the station, which is located at an altitude of 1,604 m, is located next to the Matterhorn-Gotthard Line. The Gornergrat station at 3089 m is the second highest railway station in Europe.
