The Gruta do Lago Azul – Blue Lake Cave ,it is one of the largest flooded cavities on the planet and located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.
Discovered by a Terena Indian in 1924 ,Its entrance is approximately 40 meters in diameter and circular. Next comes a main gallery with a sloping floor and descends into a lake that is more than 50 meters long, After a 100 m descent, you come across a lake of intensely blue waters, whose depth is estimated to be 90 m. giving the cave its name, an intense blue color between September and February. The wide entrance allows the lake to be illuminated by sunlight.
Due to its beauty and fragility,were listed as natural monuments in 1978 by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute the cave area was transformed into a Natural Monument, guaranteeing its preservation.
Visitors are allowed, accompanied by guides from the municipality of Bonito.The tour is fast (lasts about two hours) but the view is impressive and well worth it , Without a doubt, it is one of those unique places that you will visit once or twice in your life. !
