Hobbiton is a New Zealand location most famous for filming the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, in the upper North Island of New Zealand.
Originally the swampy area, it was drained in the 19th century by a large-scale drainage system. The 500-hectare grassy green land where Hobbiton is located belongs to the Alexander family, who moved here in 1978. Since then, it has operated as a cattle farm with about 13,000 sheep and 300 Aberdeen-Angus cattle. The main sources of income are mutton, wool and beef.
Hobbiton is now a famous tourist destination. There are currently guided tours of Hobbiton.

Highlights :
- Tours of Hobbiton (over an area of 5.5 hectares) began in 2002 and are still held daily. The two-hour tour is still very popular, so getting to Hobbiton often requires advance booking.
- This location is still an active sheep farm, only now it is visited by far more people than before. Most of the houses in the holes are fenced, and one is specially designed for visitors who are allowed to peek into the fictional home of the Hobbit for a moment.
- In March 1999, the nine-month realization of the idea for the film The Lord of the Rings began. Filming began in December 1999, and it took about three months for the District to look the way it does in the film. Filming of all three parts was completed in 2002. The filming of The Hobbit began in 2011, after the publication of which The Hobbit became an even bigger tourist attraction.
