Kaunas Castle is the oldest walled castle in Lithuania
Kaunas Castle is the oldest walled castle in Lithuania.  It is located in the city of Kaunas, at the junction of the Nemunas and the Neris to resist the attacks of the Crusaders.
The precise date of its construction is unknown. Some archaeological excavations show that a stone castle was built around the middle of the 14th century. Located on a high bank of the Nemunas river about 100 km from the capital Vilnius, it was intended as a strategic outpost for the protection of nearby towns and trade routes.

The beginning of the 15th century. The castle was enlarged with a moat, a 9 m high and 3.5 m thick wall and corner towers.
16th century. Adaptation of the castle to the use of firearms.
1560 – 1580 Construction of the artillery bastion.
18th century A flood of the Neris River destroys parts of the castle – including the northern towers.
19th century The castle serves as a prison. 1938 Beginning of the restoration of the castle tower. 1964 Opening of a war museum at the castle.

Today :  The round tower of Kaunas Castle houses an art gallery. The castle is open to visitors , and hosts occasional festivals The castle also  is used as a museum, with interactive exhibits that tell its long life story. The museum attracts many visitors every year. Therefore, if you are staying in Kaunas, make this site a must see.
