Kawthoung (Victoria Point at the time of British rule), is a small port located in the extreme south-east of Myanmar, in the administrative division of Tanintharyi, on the Pakchan or Kyan estuary that marks the border between Thailand and Myanmar.

Kawthaung It is located in the area of Tanintharyi (Tenasserim), at the mouth of Kraburi, which forms the border with Thailand. On the other side of the river is the Thai town of Ranong.
During British rule in Burma between 1824 and 1948 Kawthaung was known as Victoria Point. This place is a free trade area and is often visited by tourists with small boats from the Thai city of Ranong. Tourists often use the border crossing, as in Mae Sai or Mae Sot, for an extension of the visa.

Kawthoung is normally reached by boat from Ranong, on the other side of the river, in Thailand. Between the two ports there are regular boat services but it is also possible to rent a boat for a sum 10 times higher./  By bus : The bus and minivan connection to Myeik are available. / By plain : Myanma Airways has daily flights, and Asian Wing Airways has 3 flights per week, from Yangon.once a week) to Mawlamyine. Flights to Bokepyin and Myeik may also be available.

Highlights :

  •  The main center of tourist attraction is the Andaman Club Resort Hotel on Thahtay Kyun Island, reachable by boat in half an hour from Kawthaung or Ranong. It has the only international casino in Burma on the Andaman Sea. Some of the Mergui Islands close to the city are also popular for underwater fishing and other water activities, in a still relatively unspoiled environment.
  •  To the northwest of Kawthaung, Kawthung has a small waterfall and there are hot springs in Maliwan, 39 km to the northeast, accessible in half an hour by car.
  •  The bronze statue on the top of the promontory overlooking the port is dedicated to a 16th century Burmese king who defeated the Thai.
