Kuremäe is a village in Estonia.  It is located in the municipality of Illuka and the province of Ida-Virumaa, in the eastern part of the country, 160 km east of the capital Tallinn.
The village of Kuremäe is a holy place in Estonia. The Bogoroditskaya Mountain, on the top of which the Pühtitsa Holy Dormition Monastery is located, has been called Kuremäe (Crane Mountain) since ancient times Kuremäe is famous for the Russian Orthodox nunnery of Pühtitsa. The monastery was founded between 1892 and 1895.
According to an Orthodox legend, an apparition occurred in Kuremäe in the 16th century. An icon is said to have been found later under an old oak. According to today’s thesis, it is said to have been the remains of a chapel of the Woten. Afterwards the place was called “holy” in Estonian.
The small village of Kuremäe is famous for the Russian Orthodox Monastery of the Assumption of Pühtitsa , which is of great interest for visiting.

  • Holy spring and chapel of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary : the chapel of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was installed on the site of the old, wooden one. It is believed that in this place was the appearance of the image of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God.
  • Temple in the name of St. Nicholas and St. Arsenius the Great : Nikolo-Arsenievsky cemetery church. Consecrated in 1896. Nearby is a sacred 1000 year old oak tree. The inhabitants of Kuremäe and the inhabitants of the Pühtitsa monastery are buried in the cemetery.
  • The five  lakes of Kuremäe, About 10 km southeast of Kuremäe there are a number of lakes :  Puhatu järv, Puhatu Martiska järv, Pahanselja järv, Viinamardi järv and Korponi järv. are popular excursion destinations for hikers and anglers.
