The Saint Benedictine Melk Abbey (Stift Melk in German) is located on the Danube in Lower Austria, on the Wachau valley , above the town of Melk

As a symbol of Wachau, he enjoys the protection of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. For more than 900 years, monks have lived here under the Benedictine Order  and perform their duties, education, and pastoral work.

Visitors from all over the world and tourists from all over the world are pilgrims to the building complex to admire the wonderful beauty of this architectural masterpiece, In November 2008, National Geographic Traveler Magazine donated the title “Best Historic Destination in the World” to the Abbey: 280 journalists and tourists voted for the Melk Abbey in 109 historic destinations . In the building complex, which only has a southern wing of 240 meters, has a main crankshaft of 320 meters, has 500 rooms and has 1365 windows, there is always something to do: usually 100 employees and 200 employees of the companies in the Melk area are at the service of the abbey.

Access : Coordinates: 48.228056, 15.333889 / Location: Stift Melk ,Abt-Berthold-Dietmayr-Strasse 1 A-3390 Melk / By train :  Melk Station is on the Western Railway between St. Polten and Ybbs, but international trains do not stop there.
By plane :  The nearest airports are Wien-Schwechat and Linz-Horsching, both are about 100 kilometers from Melk. While Vienna Airport is a major international airport with many flights, Linz Airport is only a small regional airport. /
By car :  Melk can be reached from Vienna and Salzburg or Linz via the A1 West Motorway. Along the Danube the B3 run on the left and the B33 on the right bank; they are connected by a bridge on the outskirts of Melk.
By bicycle :  The Danube Cycle Route (Passau – Vienna) also runs on both sides of the Danube / By boat :
Near the mouth of the Melk in the Danube is the 2 pier of the Brandtner shipping and the DDSG blue danube, there are scheduled trips between Melk and Krems and excursions.

By cruise ship : Melk is also a popular destination for some river cruises./
By bus
The WL1 bus line runs every hour from Melk on the left bank of the Danube via Spitz to Krems on the Danube, the WL2 line runs every two hours on the right bank.

Highlights :

  • The Library :  Most visitors flock to the main library, world famous for its 16,000 ancient books (many of them a good 500 years old), awe-inspiring ceiling fresco in vibrant colours with white stucco, and richly decorated galleries and bookshelves.
  • The Marble Hall , Melk Abbey, marble hall The Marble Hall was another place to dwarf even Schonbrunn Palace’s Grand Ballroom. Greek gods roaming the blue skies of baroque star painter Paul Troger to pay reference to Habsburg Emperor Charles VI dominated the representational room
  • The Monastery’s Church , church at Melk Abbey The top five architects of European Baroque – Beduzzi, Mattielli, Prandtauer, Rottmayr, Troger – thoroughly baroquified the medieval church. The place climaxed the art of glorifying God: the rule of St. Benedict.
  • The Museum , Melk Abbey museum,  As you walked through, you traced the life of St. Benedict, the founder of Melk Abbey.
  • Coloman Courtyard ,  St. Coloman is the patron saint of Melk and the Melk Abbey

Hours: Melk Abbey can be visited daily, year round. Hours are as follows:  April to October: 9:00 am – 5:30 pm ,  November to March: Visit by guided tour only at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Tours for groups can be arranged between 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.
The Park and Pavilion are open daily from May to October 9:00 am- 6:00 pm

Admission Prices: Admission is €12.50 without a guided tour or €14.50 with a guided tour. Tickets include admission to the Abbey Park, Garden Pavilion and Bastion.

Admission to the Park/Bastion without abbey visit is €4.50
