Nugget Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse on Cape Nugget Point in the Otago region of New Zealand and a part on the Southern Scenic Route :The Southern Scenic Route is a tourist highway in New Zealand linking Queenstown, Fiordland, Te Anau and the iconic Milford Road to Dunedin via, Riverton, Invercargill and The Catlins ( Catlins – a hilly, forested coastal area in the south-eastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand ).
The lighthouse was completed in 1869 and put into operation in 1870. After initial operation with an oil lamp in 1949, it was fitted with electric lighting powered by a diesel generator. Later, the lighthouse was then connected to the mains. In 1989, the tower was fully automated and, like all other New Zealand lighthouses.
The place is ideal to Sea lions, yellow-eyed penguins, sea leopards, spoonbills, Hector’s dolphins that live on the coast and in the ocean around the lighthouse
Tip : There is no public access to enter the lighthouse

Access : Coordinates: -46.44814, 169.8169 / By car :  follow the “Southern Scenic Route” and “Heritage Trails” from Balclutha to Invercargill through the Catlins area. From Balclutha, drive to Kaka Point. From there a gravel road leads to Nugget Point. A 15 minute walk takes you  to the lighthouse.
