It is one of the largest main squares in Peru.  It is surrounded by colonial architectural monuments with a lot of history , This is where Francisco Pizarro founded the city of Lima in 1535 and in 1821 it was the scene of the proclamation of the independence of Peru.
Today it is the core of the historic center. Every day hundreds of tourists arrive interested in seeing the nearby tourist attractions such as: the Cathedral, the Government Palace, the Municipality of Lima, the Casa del Oidor, the Jirón de la Unión and more.
Because it is part of the Historic Center of Lima, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991, So, it is an icon of the capital and a must-see for tourists.
