Plockton is a village in the Scottish Highlands , in the United Kingdom, in the north-west of the country, on the shores of Loch Carron.
The place is located in the Highland Council Area on the south bank of Loch Carron, a sea loch south of the Applecross Peninsula and north of Kyle of Lochalsh. The village of Plockton, originally called Am Ploc , is first mentioned between 1787 and 1794, when an emissary from the Lord of Seaforth spoke of the need to found a village on the Plockton Peninsula.
In 1786 the area where the village stands was mentioned by John Knox, founder of the British Fishery Society, in The Highlands and Hebrides as a suitable place to create a new fishing center. In 1798 the area was bought by Sir Hugh Innes.With the arrival of Innes, various buildings were built in the village, then called Plocktown, many with farmhouses.
Plockton lies on a small peninsula on a small bay of Loch Carron that opens to the east and is thus shielded from the open sea to the west.
Most of the houses are lined up along the waterfront. Due to its location, the place has no through traffic.The partly whitewashed cottages and palm trees on the promenade are an unusual sight for the Highlands.
The local infrastructure includes three hotels and various bed and breakfasts, Several shops, pubs, restaurants and a post office are also available.
Today, the town is a popular tourist destination, largely due to the filming of the Robert Carlyle TV series Hamish Macbeth, which was well attended by locals.
