Si Phan Don ( “4,000 islands” ) is a river archipelago in the province of Champasak, District of Khong in southern Laos.
The Mekong is dammed into a 14 km wide lake-like river in which there are said to be 4,000 islands. These islands, in fact a few hundred in this place where the Mekong is about 10 km wide, are mostly small and uninhabited. The main islands of the Si Phan Don Archipelago are Don Khong (the largest), and Don Det and Don Kho, accommodation exists on certain islands.
Today , This river archipelago , the Four Thousand Islands considered a top attraction and a must visit for travelers which they visit Laos.

Highlights :
- The Mekong, just before the border with Cambodia, is broken by Khon waterfalls and numerous rapids into many islands, making the river impassable for river transport. Khon Phaphaeng Waterfall is considered the widest waterfall in Southeast Asia.
- The remains of the first railway in Laos : During French colonization in 1924, a narrow-gauge railway was built on Don Khon Island to transport gold and timber. Today, its ruins are still preserved for tourists.
- The Mekong River below the Khone Falls has a population of about 50 Irrawaddy dolphins.
