St. Mary’s Church, or Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a Catholic parish church of Gothic architecture in Krakow ,Poland.
According to the chronicler Jan Dugos, the Basilica of the Assumption in the main square in Kraków was founded in 1221-22 by the bishop of Kraków, Ivo Ontrovac. Main characteristics of the Basilica are : The high altar by Veit Stoss is considered the most important work of art. It is the largest altar of its kind in Europe and was built between 1477 and 1489. There are several memorial and gravestones on the facade. Including a recognition for the Polish Pope John Paul II. The church houses various works of art from medieval Europe.
St. Mary’s Trumpet Call : Every hour, a trumpet signal – called the Heinal mariachi – is played from the top of the taller of the two spiers. In the middle of the melody a mournful note is played to commemorate the famous 13th century trumpeter who was shot in the neck while warning the city of the Mongol attack. The signal echoes across Poland and is broadcast live by the national Polish radio station.
Saint Mary’s Basilica and is one of the landmarks of the city of Krakow due to its history, architecture and art treasures. In particular, the high altar from Veit Stoss’s workshop is known worldwide.
