Coober Pedy is located in the state of South Australia on the eastern border of the Great Victoria Desert.The extreme summer temperatures and opal mining have resulted in most residents living in underground caves known as dugouts.
The landscapes and unique, natural scenery of Coober Pedy are popular with the film industry. Filmed here are such films as Mad Max 3: Under the Dome of Thunder, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Black Hole. In addition, the city has become a popular pilgrimage destination for tourists. Several thousand people visit Coober Pedy every year.
In the city and its surroundings, the surviving remains of decorations, various mechanisms and aircraft remind of this.The area was used as the filming location for the 2000 Hollywood movie Pitch Black utilising the landscape to represent a Mars-scape.

  •  Former opal mines, the cemetery and the underground churches can be visited. There are several underground hotels with different standards.
  • The most legendary figure in Coober Pedy was Arvid Blumenthal (born March 19, 1925 in Dundaga, Latvia, died October 13, 2006 in Australia) also known as Crocodile Harry (real name Baron Arvid von Blumental). His cave is just outside of Coober Pedy.
