The giant concrete chair of Gavdos ,Cape Tripiti ( Gavdos is the southernmost Greek island ) symbolizes the southernmost point of Europe.
Tripiti beach is actually the southernmost beach in Europe. It is located seven kilometers south of the port of Karave and has a unique beach on the Libyan Sea.
After the tragic accident on April 26, 1986, when the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded, the Soviet Union sent some scientists who were have been exposed to radioactivity to be in a completely virgin place. During their stay in Gavdos, they made a giant chair about 3 meters high. The chair is placed on top of the southern rock of the island.
This chair still exists in Tripiti, which is the southernmost point of Gavdos and Greece, in the heart of the Libyan Sea, but also of the Mediterranean.
Access : Coordinates: / You can reach Tripiti in two ways. The first is on foot from a path that starts from Korfos ( Korfos is located about 2 km south of the port of Karave ) .The other way is by boat.

- The chair is placed on a rock 2.50 meters high and on a compass with the four points of the horizon. On the back of the chair you can read the instructions “Smile, Relax”, meaning that only then will you be able to find the peace and tranquility you are looking for.
- The Tripiti beach is located 7 km south of Karave, in the southernmost point of Gavdos, but also in Europe.
- Gavdos is a small island with only 150 permanent residents. It is located just a few kilometers south of Crete ( Greece ) and is the southernmost island in Europe.Gavdos has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. The island has been identified with Ogygia, where Calypso held Odysseus captive.The Apostle Paul passed through the leeward side of the island, during his final voyage to Rome. After leaving Crete, a storm took his ship off course, as a result of which it passed by Gavdos.
- The beach is named after the three impressive rocky arches, at the top of which is the famous “Chair of Gavdos”.
