The ritual gate or torii of Itsukushima Shrine is one of Japan’s most popular attractions. the view of torii from one of the island’s hills is included in the so-called “Three Famous Landscapes of Japan.” Although torii existed as early as 1168, the current gate was built in 1875. The torii is made from camphor wood and is 16 meters high. Among visitors to this picturesque place, it is customary to leave coins in the cracks of the pillars of the ritual gates and make wishes. It is possible to reach the gate on foot from the island during low tides. Since 1996 it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
