Meloria is a small rock in the Tyrrhenian Sea that rises from an area of shoals (the so-called Secche della Meloria) about seven kilometers from the port of Livorno.
The tower is an eighteenth-century construction that stands alone in the stretch of sea which in 1284 was the scene of the famous battle in which the fleet of the Republic of Genoa overwhelmed that of the Republic of Pisa, which never recovered from this defeat.
The tower is part of the Secche della Meloria Marine Protected Area , there is restrictions and fees for visitors in the protected area.
