The Warnemünde lighthouse is in the Baltic Sea resort of Warnemünde, a district of the Hanseatic city of Rostock.in the district of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany.
The Warnemünde lighthouse, commissioned in 1878, marks the narrow entrance to the channel to Rostock. Its Fresnel lens originally received a kerosene burner which was improved in 1911. In 1917 it was converted to gas, and electrified in 1919. The lighthouse was occupied by keepers until 1978, when it was automated.
Since 1999, the Warnemünde lighthouse has been used on January 1 of each year for a fireworks and sound and light show. Numerous visitors use the ascent to get an overview of Warnemünde. Most of the tourist activities are carried out and supervised by a non-profit association.

Highlights :

  • Warnemünde lighthouse is a tapered cylindrical brick tower 31m high, with two galleries. The tower is unpainted in light gray brick and the cylindrical lantern is metallic green with a copper dome. It emits, at a focal height of 34 m, four short white flashes of 0.3 seconds, per period of 24 seconds. Its range is 20 nautical miles (approximately 37 km).
  • Panoramic views: The tower  offers visitors an impressive panoramic view of the Baltic Sea, Warnemünde and Rostock. Two viewing platforms are available for this from May to September.
  • The exhibition : In the ground station at the foot of the tower, the lighthouse men have set up an exhibition about the development of the fishing town of Warnemünde into a Baltic seaside resort.
  • A variety of events take place on the lighthouse forecourt: concerts, craft market, the traditional costume and shanty meeting as part of the Warnemünde Week or traditional Christmas singing.
  • Since 1999, the Warnemünder lighthouse has been spectacularly staged by the event “Warnemünder Tower Lights” (formerly “Lighthouse in Flames”) with a laser show, music and fireworks. This event traditionally takes place on January 1st and every year attracts several thousand spectators to the Baltic Sea resort.
