An stranded American landing vessel (US Navy LCM) dated back to world war 2. stranded on the edge of the fjord in Mjóifjörður on the east coast of Iceland. 70 years of tides have done some damage, but the structure is still recognizable.
The landing craft had nothing to do with Iceland and ww2. The story is a bit more simple…some farmers bought it from the Americans surplus after the war and transported it to Iceland and then after many years in use it was just left there to rust..
Mjóifjörður is an 18-kilometer long fjord between the North Bay and Seyðisfjörður. As the name suggests, the fjord is narrow and extremely weather-friendly. The fjord boasts unique natural beauty and it is a well hidden treasure in between the mountains.
Access : Coordinates: 65.191468, -14.010859 / Transportation to Mjóifjörður can be difficult during the winter months, but the Floabatur Anny runs all year, between Brekkuþorp and Neskaupstadur, twice a week. There is a good road around Slenjudalur and over Mjóafjarðarheiði, but there is no regular winter opening. There is a road with the fjord, to the north, all the way to Dalatanga.
