What Makes Anse La Roche Bay So Special?
Picture this: soft, white sands bordered by gentle turquoise waves, framed by verdant hills that provide a picturesque backdrop. But here’s the kicker – because of its relative inaccessibility, Anse La Roche is never crowded. While everyone else is fighting for elbow room on Grand Anse Beach, you’ll have this stunning stretch of coastline practically to yourself.
Located on Carriacou (Grenada’s charming sister island), this hidden gem isn’t just another pretty beach – it’s an experience that’ll spoil you for ordinary Caribbean vacations forever.
Getting There: The Adventure Begins
Address: Anse la Roche, Grenada
Option 1: The Scenic Hike (For the Adventurous)
From Bogles, take a left at the wooden hut-like Boggles Bulletin Board where the main road bends. Follow that road, which quickly turns to dirt, for 25 minutes on foot veering right where the power lines veer left, until you see a small sign pointing to the narrow path. Follow that path down through the forest for 15 minutes.
Pro tip: Drove down a bunny dirt road until the car couldn’t go any further, found a park and continued to trek for abt 15/20 mins. It’s steep and requires decent fitness, but trust me – the payoff is incredible.
Option 2: Water Taxi (For the Smart)
Why make it hard on yourself? You can just drop in with a water taxi from Hillsborough (US$75 round trip). This is honestly the move if you want to save your energy for beach time instead of jungle trekking.
What You’ll Find When You Get There
The Beach That Dreams Are Made Of
The beach is truly majestic and serene, turquoise water and sand that glitters in the sun. We’re talking about the kind of water clarity where you can watch fish swimming around your feet – no Instagram filter needed.
Snorkeling Paradise
Anse La Roche is highly recommended for snorkelers and beginner divers and Anse La Roche Beach is perfect for snorkeling. The vibrant coral reefs here are home to colorful tropical fish, and if you’re lucky, you might spot sea turtles gliding through the water like underwater angels.
The Chef Tim Experience: Beach Dining at Its Finest
Here’s where things get really interesting. Ever heard of a beach where a local chef sets up shop right on the sand? Meet Tim Garraway (aka Chef Tim), who runs what might be the most unique dining experience in the entire Caribbean.
What’s on the Menu?
Grilled lobster, fish, chicken, and conch along with garlic potatoes that you will dream about for years to come. Seriously, people are still talking about those garlic potatoes years later. He also serves lobster, lambi, tuna, plantains, rice and a dessert of fried bananas drizzled with chocolate.
The Experience
A water taxi collected us and brought us to this hidden gem where we feasted with our feet in the sand! Imagine fresh lobster grilled right in front of you while you’re literally sitting on one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. This isn’t just dinner – it’s theater.
How to book: You can usually arrange this through your hotel or local tour operators, though Tim’s Sunset Beach Bar and Restaurant has a Facebook page where you can reach out directly.
Wildlife Watching Opportunities
Sea Turtles
This secluded beauty – an important nesting spot for sea turtles. If you visit during nesting season (March to September), you might witness one of nature’s most incredible spectacles.
Birds Galore
The beach was named for a huge rock where pelicans gather, so bird-watchers will also be thrilled. Keep your eyes peeled for frigatebirds, brown boobies, and those majestic pelicans that gave the beach its name.
Essential Tips for Your Visit
What to Bring
Since this is a secluded beach with no facilities so be sure to walk with lots of water and food to eat if you plan on spending a considerable amount out of time, pack smart:
- Plenty of water (more than you think you need)
- Snacks or a picnic lunch (unless you’re doing the Chef Tim experience)
- Snorkeling gear (rentals aren’t available here)
- Sunscreen (shade is limited)
- Cash (for water taxi or any local vendors)
Best Times to Visit
Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere. Plus, the lighting for photos is absolutely magical during golden hour.
What NOT to Expect
Don’t come looking for beach bars, lounge chairs, or WiFi. This place is about disconnecting and experiencing the Caribbean as it was meant to be – wild, beautiful, and unspoiled.
Getting to Carriacou from Grenada
The journey to this paradise starts with getting to Carriacou itself. You can fly (about 30 minutes from Grenada) or take the ferry from St. George’s (about 1.5 hours). The ferry is cheaper and offers beautiful views, but flights are obviously faster.
Why Anse La Roche Should Be on Your Bucket List
In a world where “hidden gems” are becoming increasingly rare thanks to social media, Anse La Roche Bay remains authentically untouched. You’ll usually have it to yourself, although you may emerge from the jungle to find some yachties hanging around.
This isn’t just another beach to check off your list – it’s the kind of place that changes your perspective on what a Caribbean vacation can be. Where else can you snorkel in crystal-clear waters, dine on fresh lobster with your toes in the sand, and not see another soul for hours?
The Bottom Line
If you’re tired of cookie-cutter beach resorts and Instagram-clogged “paradise” destinations, Anse La Roche Bay is your antidote. Yes, it requires a bit more effort to reach. Yes, you’ll need to pack your own supplies. But trust us – the moment you round that final bend on the trail and see this pristine bay spread out before you, you’ll understand why some travelers guard this secret so jealously.
Planning a trip to Grenada? Don’t just hit the usual tourist spots. Take the water taxi to Anse La Roche, book a meal with Chef Tim, and prepare to fall in love with the Caribbean all over again. Your future self will thank you for discovering this slice of paradise before everyone else does.
