The Brooklyn Bridge  is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the world.
The Brooklyn Bridge (originally New York and Brooklyn Bridge) in New York City is a combined suspension and cable-stayed bridge and one of the oldest suspension bridges of this type in the USA.

Construction began on January 3, 1870, and the bridge was officially opened on May 24, 1883. The total cost of building the bridge is approximately $ 15 million. During the construction works, 27 workers were killed.

The chief designer died early in the construction and his job was taken over by his son, Washington Robbing. However, he also pays for his health – due to the constant exposure to adverse conditions, he becomes ill with decompression sickness.

The project has not been tested in an aerodynamic tunnel, which for many years raises concerns that it will not withstand strong air currents, like other bridges of this type. However, the construction of the bridge is strong enough and the bridge has been in operation for over 120 years. In 1977, the bridge was included in the US Register of Historic Sites.

The bridge now has six lanes and a wide footpath and bike path on the level above. At the time of its completion in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world; it exceeded all previously built by more than 50 percent in length. The Brooklyn Bridge quickly became a new landmark for the city of New York.
