Calico is a ghost town located in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It is located in the Calico Mountains in the Mojave Desert, a region belonging to Southern California. It was founded in 1881 as a silver mining city. It is currently a state park called –Calico Ghost Town– .
It is located 3 miles from Barstow and the city of Yermo. Giant letters that say CALICO can be observed on the tip of the mountains from the road, just behind the ghost town. Walter Knott acquired Calico in the 1950s and restored all the buildings in the city – except for 5 of them that remain with their original architecture-  to look like in the 1880s. Calico received the historic mark of California # 782. And in 2005 it was declared by the then governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, as The Phantom City of the Silver Fever.
