The ancestors of the Oloni Indians settled the lands of the present city as early as 2700 BC. After the Mexicans gained independence in 1824, the Mexican government provided its citizens and immigrants from America with plots of land for the purpose of setting up a ranch. After the war between America and Mexico, the lands of Daly City began to belong to the United States. By the early 1860s, poor potato and grain crops caused many families to abandon their ranches. Those who remained became engaged in cattle breeding and oil production. In the second half of the 19th century, the settlement began to grow rapidly, new houses and schools were built along the railway. The town was incorporated in 1911, but it was relatively small until the 1940s, when Henry Delger opened the Westlake construction firm here.
The name of the city was given to the businessman and landowner John Daly. Daly City is one of the few cities in the continental United States where the majority of the population is of Asian descent, with the largest ethnic groups being Filipinos and Chinese.
