It is privately owned by the Welds, a family who owns 12,000 acres (50 km2) in Dorset in the name of the Lulworth Estate. It is open to the public. The name Durdle is derived from the Old English ‘thirl’ meaning bore or drill. In literature and popular culture : Music videos have been filmed at Durdle Door, including parts of Tears for Fears’ “Shout”, Billy Ocean’s “Loverboy”, and Cliff Richard’s “Saviour’s Day”.
