Until the 1970s, Hikkaduwa was a “dreamy” fishing village. It was then discovered by young individual tourists who enjoyed the beauty of beach life there as hippies or surfers. Numerous simple pensions, restaurants and pubs emerged. In the 1980s the first larger hotels were built and package tourism developed.
Hikkaduwa today is one of the most popular and developing resorts in Sri Lanka. People come here, first of all, for a beach holiday and a well-developed resort infrastructure.

Access : Coordinates: 6.147222, 80.110278 / Hikkaduwa located approximately 100 km south of the state capital, Colombo, and 20 km north-west of the provincial capital, Galle.

  • The city was featured in an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s “No reservations” show as a popular surf destination.
  • Hikaduwa Beach or Hikaduwa Coral Reef, less than a kilometer long, is protected by coral reefs. As for diving and snorkeling, according to some estimates, this is one of the best places in Sri Lanka for diving, and almost the dive capital of the country.
  • Top sights in Hikkaduwa , Sri Lanka : Hikkaduwa Beach – reputed to be the second best surf spot in Sri Lanka. / Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary – located a few hundred meters from the coast. The sanctuary has approximately seventy varieties of multicolored corals.
